Treatment of Cold Sores

Unfortunately for everyone, there is no known cure for herpes virus infections as of yet. However, there are antiviral drugs that can be used which have some effects on lessening the symptoms and decreasing the length of the outbreaks. There is evidence that some drugs can prevent future outbreaks as well. These antiviral drugs interfere with the replication of the viruses. They are most effective when taken very early in the infection process – the earlier it is, the better it gets. For optimal results, drug treatment should begin during the initial stage when the blisters can be seen. The length of the treatment depends on the visibility of blisters.

The known drug of choice for treating herpes infection is Acyclovir (Zovirax). It can be given to the patients intravenously or taken by mouth. It can also be applied directly to sores as an ointment or salves although it is not very useful in this form. For children, a liquid form of treatment is available. Zovirax is both effective in treating the primary infection as well as recurrent outbreaks. When taken orally to prevent an outbreak, the drug reduces the frequency of herpes outbreaks.

During cold sore outbreaks, consumption of salty foods, citrus foods and other types of food that irritate the sores must be avoided at all cost. The sore should be cleaned twice a day regularly with warm water. After cleaning, pat gently to dry the area. Non-prescription lip products containing the chemical phenol (medicated lip ointment) and numbing ointments help relieve cold sores. Over the sores, one might want to apply a bandage to protect them. It is also useful in preventing the spreading of the virus to other sites besides the lips or face.

Alternatively, vitamins and mineral supplements as well as a good diet may affect the recurrence and duration of cold sores. Cold sore sufferers should generally eat a healthy diet consisting of unprocessed foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Foods and drinks containing alcohol, caffeine, and sugar should be avoided whenever possible.

A diet that is rich in lysine helps prevent recurrences of cold sores. Suggestions of foods containing high levels of lysine include most fresh vegetables, legumes, fish, turkey, and chicken. In one study conducted in the past, patients who take lysine supplements had had milder symptoms during an outbreak plus a shorter healing time. Patients should take 1,000mg of lysine three times a day during a cold sore outbreak. After that, it is essential for them to take 500mg daily on an ongoing basis to prevent recurrences. Arginine should not be taken when someone has the infection. If it is a must to take then, intake should be reduced.
